Mill Dene Garden has become the passion of Wendy Dare's life. Knowing absolutely nothing about horticulture, early in her married life Wendy and her husband Barry discovered this beautiful half-derelict Cotswold water mill and the story began.

The garden grew as they learned more and as more land was added giving views over the lovely hills of the Cotswolds: the virgin field of pasture facing north was bought and tamed; and had its Cotswold 'brash' turned into a shady woodland area: the little valley facing south had its sides terraced into the 'cricket lawn': the cold, fast running stream had bogs added to extend the plant palette.

Nowadays, Wendy and Barry are refining their treasure, the last territorial claim made! What this 'treasure' is is hard to define. It is definitely an English country garden, but not entirely a cottage garden. It is a child of the Arts and Crafts Movement, but not entirely Arts & Crafts. In parts it is even exotic.

It is relaxed, innovative and fun; a very personal garden. It is a garden of peace and tranquility (even if the beautiful kingfisher and heron are eating the trout!). The air is usually heavily scented as priority is given to scented plants. The air is also redolent with the sound of water which comes and goes intriguingly as one moves around the garden. It can be a place to talk to your God if you have one

Now the Dares, and their Birman cats, enjoy sharing their garden and hope to see you there soon. If you are truly blessed Magnificat will give you a guided tour...
