秋の雨でガーデンは赤やオレンジに


　６週間も雨のない日々が続いていた英国をあとにして、１０月に日本を訪れました。

　私たちはガーデンに定期的に水やりをしなければなりませんでした。これが原因なのか、ガーデンに初めてアナグマがいるのを見つけました。彼らは、やわらかい土にいるミミズを探しながら、芝生に小さな穴をいくつも残していきます。


　でも、こんな穴はまったく気になりません。ゆったりリラックスした時間をガーデンで楽しむ私たちにとって、ぴったりと調和していることなのです。こんなできごとや、アヒルたちがテラスを台無しにしてしまうようなちょっとした困りごとなんて、黙認します。私たちの惑星に住むほかの住人たちと一緒に暮らすことを楽しんでいます。


　いよいよ秋の雨がやってきて、ガーデンは赤、真紅、茶、オレンジといった色彩に変わりました。日々変化していきます。早霜の朝は美しく、太陽の光を受けた霜がガーデンの実りを明るく照らします。葉がすっかり落ちると、目の前には思いがけない景色が広がります。哲学的な説明なんて十分。さぁ、ガーデンの冬支度をはじめましょう。

I left England for Japan in October after a period of six weeks without rain. We have had to irrigate regularly and I suppose because of this we have had badgers in the garden for the first time looking for worms in the softer ground, leaving little holes in the lawn. We don' really mind this as it fits in with our fairly 'laid back' (or relaxed) attitude to our garden here. We tolerate minor inconveniences like this or like the mess the ducks make on the terrace, because we enjoy the company of these other dwellers of our planet.

Now the Autumn rain has come, the colours have turned to red, crimson, brown and orange. Every day brings change. Early frosts make the mornings beautiful, highlighting the old seedheads in the slanting sun. Suddenly new views are opened up as leaves fall. There is nothing for it, enough of this philosophising: we shall have to start work putting the garden to bed for the winter.
