「カサカサ」という落ち葉の音を楽しむ

昨日は強い嵐の一日でした。木々は道になぎ倒され、鉢はあちこちに転んで壊れてしまいました。嵐のあいだ、鳥たちはいったいどこへ行ったのでしょう！ 　秋の美しい色彩は全部、足元に落ちてしまいましたが、孫たちは落ち葉をけりあげながら歩き、カサカサという葉の音を楽しんでいます。お天気のことで誰かが幸せになれるなんて嬉しいですね。私はといえば、ミル（※１）から落ち葉を取り除くために夜中、起きていなければなりませんでした。そのままにしておいて家に押し寄せてしまわないように！！ 　もっと悪い事態もやってきました。毎日、ミル・デーンのガーデンの世話をしてくれている忠実なガーデナー、アンドリューが手術を受けるためにクリスマスまでお休みになるのです。アンドリューのいない間は、ふだんガーデンの芝刈りを手伝ってくれているジョンが、ガーデンの冬支度を手伝ってくれることになっています。ジョンは素敵なグロースター訛り（※２）で話す大男なんですよ。 ※１ Wendyさんの住まいである『Mill Dene（ミル・デーン）』にはノーマン時代からのミル（製粉場）があり、１３〜１４世紀には製粉機も動いていたそうです。 ※２ Gloucestershire（グロースター州）はイングランド南西部の州 Wendy Dare From Mill Dene in the heart of the Cotswolds

Yesterday, we had a storm force gale. Trees were knocked over into the road, pots rolled over and were broken: I have no idea where the birds went!

All that beautiful Autumn colour is now underfoot and how the grandchildren love the noise of the leaves as they kick their way through them! I'm glad someone is happy with the weather: I had to get up during the night to clear the leaves from the mill pool over-flow to stop it flooding the house!!

Worse was to come though, Andrew, my faithful full-time gardener needs an operation and will now be off until Christmas. John, a giant of a man who speaks with a wonderful Gloucestershire accent and normally mows the laws part-time, will help me put the garden to bed.
